Ruth Harris Scholars Pre-Service Teachers
In honor of Ruth Harris, a pioneer in the treatment of dyslexia who dedicated her life to helping others with learning disabilities, The inaugural VDOE Spring Reading Academy Pilot for Pre-Service Teachers (10 VCU students in their junior year) 20-25 hours of tutoring in Richmond City Public Schools (RPS classroom sites (with OG Classroom Educators).
Goals of VDOE Pre-Service Summer Reading Academy
The goal of the VDOE Pre-Service Summer Reading Academy Pilot is to provide VCU students who are rising juniors in the school of education with an opportunity to:

Participate in a virtual 30 hour VDOE Pre-Service Summer Reading Academy focusing on a Multi-sensory Structured Literacy approach to teaching reading and spelling

Observe a reading specialist, who is certified as a Classroom Educator through the Orton-Gillingham Academy of Educators and Practitioners and teaches in Richmond City Public Schools (RPS), and provide instruction using a structured literacy approach with elementary students for five hours in the classroom or school setting.

Tutor small groups of students for a minimum of twenty hours using a structured literacy approach under the supervision of the same Classroom Educator.
